[šŸšŸ‡ŗ] Hello World!

May the 4th Be with You!

Hello World!

I took computer science in college.

So I wanted to be clever … my 1st newsletter starts with my 1st computer program

Well, you know what they say about Karma …

The tech was supposed to take 30 minutes. It was almost 10 hours!

JUST to sign up & get a Welcome email.

🤬

Sharing frustration with the tech is an odd way to launch, isn’t it?

But that’s what you can expect.

Not the grumbling … the truth.

Doesn’t it feel like all anyone ever shares are the epic wins.

… how ā€œeasyā€ ā€œsimpleā€ & ā€œeffectiveā€ things are.

They are.

Sometimes. Rarely.

And no one talks about what can (and often does) go wrong.

We see people having epic wins & think, ā€œif I get a small piece of thatā€¦ā€

But when you look closely, they’re mostly not like us … they’re very different…

  • different place in their journey

  • have different responsibilities & commitments

  • tried different things

  • learn in different ways &/or at a different pace

The list is loooooong. (& did I mention the tech isn’t always easy or simple?!)

I’m sure as I drop un-popular opinions (or rarely spoken of back-room practices) I’ll get (more) flack & unsubscribes.

But the whole point of this is to talk about things no one’s talking about …

… to disrupt the industry - saying what others aren’t willing to say

… to play Devil’s Advocate 😈 (& I DO have devil horns I sometimes wear on calls!)

… to be a šŸ’© disturber

It’s a choice.

It’s taking a stand & going out on a limb.

I’m ruffling feathers

Where do you want to start? ← link to anonymous survey

  • Topics or practices you don’t agree with … or seem outdated.

  • Standards that should exist but don’t

  • What do you do as a best practice that most in your industry don’t do?

  • What misconceptions are there that just won’t go away?

How about how I’m not supposed to mention ā€œunsubscribingā€ in the Welcome email?

I should be encouraging clicks & replies to ā€œboost deliverabilityā€.

Really? 🤨

Legally, newsletters require an unsubscribe button.

It’s right there at the bottom of every email.

Hopefully, it’s easy to see. (If it’s not, please let me know so I can fix it.)

The point is, don’t feel obligated to stay subscribed.

Your time is precious & you have thousands of things wanting your attention.

Choose wisely.

Along with other things you ask about & that I’ve seen, experienced & learned (or should have!) in bootstrapping my way through launching 3 successful businesses.

As for deliverability … let’s boost it with good content that engages … it doesn’t have to be a ā€œtrickā€.

If I share useful information (wins & losses) in an entertaining/comfortable way so you keep reading, THAT has much better & longer impact.

Now that you know the WHAT to expect … here’s WHY …

ā€œWhen you have something that you care a lot about … that’s really important to you … THAT’S when marketing is most important. Because you have to evangelize and persuade other people to feel what you feel about this thing.ā€

Ryan Holliday (author of The Daily Stoic)

My dad was a phenomenal musician. I called him the ā€œEddie Van Halen of accordions.ā€

The difference was, he didn’t go pro. He lacked support & know-how to try.

Instead, he settled for a ā€œsafeā€ job with a steady paycheck that paid the bills.

The problem was, it didn’t feed his soul.

I didn’t realize that until it was too late to help him.

He died with regrets.

But that inspired me to change how I live my life.

And I honour his memory by helping people like him … like us!

YOU started your business for a reason that’s ā€œreally importantā€ to you.

And it’s not the money.

There are tonnes of jobs that give you that.

My dad had one. I did too.

So … we’ll look at things like time management, marketing, earning, saving, spending … & even mindset.

Because nothing’s going to be perfect & there’s always someone (or something – hello tech!) that blocks our path.

And the solution isn’t necessarily another program, podcast, or book!

In fact, it’s probably NOT.

Until next time, May the 4th be with you on your entrepreneurial journey.

As my Mamma Mia used to say, ā€œYou gotta keepie goieā€
