Got a flat? Grab a knife! [šŸU]

If you got a flat tire on the side of the road, would you:

A. Fix it and keep going
B. Slash the other three out of frustration & wait for a tow truck

You'd probably pick A (yes, calling for help counts)

But as freelancers & solopreneurs?

Something goes wrong, we end up with a flat & suddenly:
 āŒ Burn the offer
 āŒ Rethink the niche
āŒ Question if we’re even ā€œmeantā€ for this

We go from flat tire to full-blown sabotage & want to slash the other tires … FAST!

What we need to do is stop making permanent decisions based on temporary pain.

Look, I get it.
Imposter syndrome is a deadly disease.
It paralyses you & kills your ability to realize your dreams.

I did a lot of that growing up.
I tried to ā€œfit inā€ & ā€œbe a good girlā€ even though it went against every ounce of my being.

ā€œdo this, not thatā€
ā€œbe like this, not thatā€

I thought there was something wrong with me.

I realize now that I was surrounded by ā€œcrabsā€

& because I didn’t have the support, encouragement, or confidence to listen to my gut…
I went along.

Fortunately, I reached a limit & rebelled.
Unfortunately, that made me do the exact opposite of what I was ā€œsupposedā€ to do.

The problem … that wasn’t being true to myself either.

I eventually found my balance … sort of.
It’s never going to be perfect.
There’s always going to be bumps in the road

& when you struggle with something a lot, you’re going to wonder,
ā€œshould I keep going?ā€
ā€œmaybe I should quit while I’m behindā€

That’s going to happen with everything as you learn & grow & find your way.

It’s no different from
→ learning to play a sport or an instrument
→ studying for exams to escape high school
→ learning to drive, ride a bike … or even walk!

I don’t know anyone that was 100% self-sufficient the day they were born.

You learned to eat, walk, read, use a toilet!

You need time to learn, practice, & build momentum.

Setbacks are part of life, especially when you're starting a business.

It’s in those setbacks where the true learning happens.

That’s especially true if you’re trying to do something the people you’re surrounded by have never done.

But quitting on your dream of building a business, being your own boss, working for YOUR family’s future instead of someone else’s …

Quitting doesn’t save you from discomfort.
It guarantees regret.

If this is really what you want.
If you have clarity in what that looks like & what it means for you…

Keep going.

You don’t need to learn everything all at once.

You already know how to do the thing you want to do … at least enough to get started.

You need to learn to communicate effectively with people who would pay you for it.

It’s not as easy as it sounds.

Your instinct is to talk about the thing you’re doing.
That’s natural.
It’s what lights you up … otherwise, you wouldn’t be building a business around it.

But those aren’t the same things that are going to motivate your clients to work with you.
They have other things.

Your thing helps them … sure!

But you need to be able to show them, not tell them.

If you’re technical, creative, a visionary & they’re not…

You need to meet them where they’re at.
With the language they understand
& reasons to follow through that resonate.

AWAI (American Writer’s & Artists Inst.) has a great foundational program to get started with communicating with the people you want to help.

Technically, The AWAI Method is a copywriting course …
But I think it’s so much more than that.

Yes, at the heart it’s so you can ā€œsellā€ but it’s not that pushy bro-marketing or sleazy used-car salesman nonsense.

It’s about talking to (not at) your prospects.
& it shows you where to find them so you can have those chats.

I know because I took the program when it first launched.

I’m an ā€œOGā€ … technically THE ā€œOGā€

The first to get started & work through the program.
They sent me a custom-engraved Yeti mug in honor of that.

That’s the program they recommend starting with.

When I have mentoring calls with new members, I ask how far along they are in the program.

& it’s something you should finish before letting the ā€œShiny Object Syndromeā€ fuel your Imposter Syndrome.

You can get through it in a month (or less if you’re a keener like I was)

But because it’s about learning, understanding & applying the content …
You have a full 365 days to make it work for you & your business.

Because no matter what business we’re in, we all need to communicate better.

& we need to stay focused on what gives us momentum, not just motion

The only way I’ve found is to start building habits … itty bitty Tiny Habits

BJ Fogg (Tiny Habits author) has a free 5-day mini tiny course that’s about 3 minutes

No matter how busy, you have 3 minutes in your day during a work week…
Even if you have to spend an extra 3 minutes in the bathroom, so you’re not disturbed.

There’s also the book you can check out of the library.

Or - my go-to - get help & accountability from a certified coach.

You’re not going to lose 25 pounds & fit into the bikini just by joining the gym & wanting it.

You can’t run the finish the ironman by sitting on a lawnchair along the course cheering everyone else on.

You can’t attract clients & get them to pay you for help if you’re just talking about you & how much you need the money.

So whatever causes you to get a flat…
→ trouble staying focused on the road
→ bulldozing over prospects instead of pulling over & giving them a lift.

Fix your flat instead of slashing the other tires & keep driving.

Make it a great ā€œroad-worthyā€œ week!
