Confidently going the WRONG way ... [🐝U]

It's really me reading … dry throat scratchiness & all.

I'm knee-deep in a Klaviyo implementation right now.

The logic & the flowcharts made complete sense on paper.
But figuring out how to "explain” that to Klaviyo so it works the way it's supposed to? That's a different problem entirely.

The platform has its own constraints.
& when you're trying to map clean logic onto a tool that doesn't always bend the way you need it to... you end up making compromises.

Some of those compromises created gaps.
I know that.

The frustrating part is I can’t tell where the gaps are anymore.
I've looked at the thing so many times that every decision feels reasonable.

So before Tuesday's meeting with the owner...
my client & I are going through it together.

Not because they know Klaviyo better than I do.
Because 2 people talking through a problem finds things that 1 person staring at for 6 straight hours never will.

Sometimes all it takes is someone asking:
"Wait... why does that happen there?"
& suddenly the thing you've been missing becomes obvious.

They can spot where something's off.
Maybe not always explain exactly why... but that's what the conversation is for.
The fix comes out of the talking.

That review process wasn't something I scrambled to put together this week.
It was scoped into the proposal before the contract was signed.

Because I knew this moment was coming.

Why editors exist... & it's not what most people think

There's a reason marketing has copy chiefs. A reason learning design has review cycles. A reason editors exist even for writers who are genuinely skilled at their craft.

Most people assume it's about catching errors. It's not.

It's about proximity.

When you're the only brain that ever touches something...
you stop being able to see it clearly.

Not because you're careless.
Because familiarity starts filling in the blanks for you.

You stop reading what's actually there.
You start reading what you meant.

The 2nd set of eyes usually isn't smarter than the first.

That's the mistake people make.
They’re just far enough away from the problem to notice the thing you've stopped seeing.

The thing you've read past 17 times.
The assumption you've been carrying for 3 weeks without realizing it.

The gap that became invisible because you've been too close to it for too long.

There are actually 3 things it does

& most people only think about 1.

→ It checks the output. Does this hold up? Is the logic sound? Is there a gap? That's the one everyone thinks of. The editor function.

→ It checks the direction. Is this even the right thing to be working on right now? This is the one that saves you from spending weeks months building something that moves nothing. Busy isn't the same as productive. Executing the wrong step really well is still the wrong step.

→ It challenges your thinking. Not just "does this look right" — but "why are we doing it this way?" The one that catches you rationalizing instead of reasoning. The one that asks the question you didn't know you needed to answer.

& here's what it doesn't require

The person reviewing doesn't have to know more than you.

They have to know enough about the goal & the territory to recognize when something's off... & to talk it through until the path forward is clearer.

That last part matters. A review isn't handing something over & waiting for a verdict. It's a conversation. The gap surfaces in the talking. Sometimes the person spotting the problem can't name the fix — but the act of naming the problem out loud is what gets you there.

Which means the bar isn't "find someone who knows more than you." It's "find someone who knows enough to know if something's headed in the wrong direction."

Because I've watched people spend years on the things that feel like progress — perfecting the website, building the social presence, optimizing the back end — & never land a paying client.

The work wasn't bad. It was out of sequence.

& the person they asked to look at it didn't know enough to say: this isn't the problem yet.

An accountability partner can witness that you showed up.
Someone who knows the territory can tell you whether the work matters.

Those are very different jobs.

What about AI?

You can connect AI to almost any platform now. & there are things it does genuinely well … research, drafting, the mechanical parts of execution.

But it will help you build exactly what you asked for.
Which sounds useful... right up until you realize you're asking the wrong question.

AI rarely stops and says:
"Are you sure this is the thing that needs building?"

It executes your prompt.
It doesn't question it.

A person who knows the work will say hang on. 
They'll push back when the reasoning feels shaky.
They'll notice when something's off before they can even explain why.
& then they'll talk it through with you until it makes sense.

AI is a tool.
A useful one.
But a tool that executes your thinking is not the same as a person who challenges it.

Meanwhile, on the property...

The rain barrels that couldn't handle what this spring threw at them needed a better solution.

My neighbour had an IBC tote — a 300-gallon tank in a metal frame. Right idea. Got it into position. Hooked it up.

It also leaked.

Almost 300 gallons ended up in & around the barn foundation instead of inside the tank. Spent significant time running the ATV up close to the walls with the harrow & leveler trying to manage the damage.

& I had no one to run the plan by first.

My version of a second opinion out here is asking myself what my dad would have MacGyver'd... & drawing on 12+ seasons of Homestead Rescue my mom & I watched together.

Resourceful.
Still 1 brain.
Still nobody standing beside the tote saying:
"Have you considered what happens if this leaks too?"

The idea was right.
The scope was off …1 tote for 2 downspouts.
Nobody there to ask have you thought about...?

There's a deadline on this too.
My mom's house sells end of July.
Which means there's a very real deadline attached to a lot of things I'd rather not be rushing through.

The goal is dry.
Secure.
Functional.
By a specific date.

The difference between the client work & the property isn't urgency.
Both have real deadlines. Both have imperfect solutions in motion.

The difference is that 1 has a second set of eyes designed in from the start.
& 1 is running entirely on my inexperience.

So what does this mean for your business?

Here's the honest audit.

Where does someone else look at your work before it ships?
Where does someone check whether you're working on the right things in the right order?
Where does someone push back on your thinking before you've invested
→ too much time...
→ too much money...
→ or too much pride...
to change direction?

& when you find those spots …
is the person looking qualified enough to recognize if step 1 is actually step 6?

Not more experienced than you necessarily.
Just experienced enough to know if the path leads where you think it does...
& to have the conversation that helps you figure out what to do when it doesn't.

Because the gaps don't usually show up when things are calm.
They show up when the pressure arrives.
& by then... untangling it costs a lot more than 1 honest conversation earlier would have.

Pick 1 thing you're working on right now.
Then find 1 person who knows the territory well enough to challenge it.

Not approve it.
Challenge it.

The earlier the conversation happens...
the cheaper the lesson usually is.

Remember, that’s not someone who'll tell you it looks great.
Someone who'll talk it through with you until you both know if it is.
